RFCLA have fallen short to the SD Legion by 2 points at home in front of a record crowd of 2856 fans.

The 38-36 loss is the team’s third 2-point loss in four matches, with the team still achieving two bonus points by finishing within seven points and scoring four tries and trail SD by just 4 points on the ladder.

The two sides went punch-for-punch all afternoon, with the halftime score deadlocked at 17-all. Momentum shifted sharply in the second half after both teams were shown yellow cards, leaving each a man down. San Diego capitalized during this stretch, seizing a slim lead they would never relinquish.

Reece McDonald orchestrated a sharp attack for LA throughout the match, while Billy Meakes put in a standout performance, scoring two tries — including the final one that brought RFC LA within two points in the dying moments. A missed conversion attempt following Meakes' last-minute score dashed hopes of sending the match into extra time, and San Diego ultimately held on to retain the Cali Cup.

RFCLA now shifts focus to their final two home games of the season — and the club has launched Club24 founding memberships, available for a limited time. For just $24, fans can lock in exclusive benefits both in and out of season, including $24 off a 2026 season ticket. Memberships can be purchased now at RugbyFCLA.com.
